Like a Gazelle runs from his hunter, you should run from your debt!
Are you on alert? Are you in a full sprint away from your hunter? I hope you are not laying down allowing the master of your debt to eat you alive. Get up and run for your lives!
The book of Proverbs says this:
Proverbs 6:4-5 Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids, deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, and like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
If you are familiar with Dave Ramsey, you have probably seen the video of the gazelle in the Serengeti who is chased by the cheetah. If not, what happens is the gazelle is minding his own business while enjoying an afternoon grassy meal. Along comes a cheetah, the fastest land animal in the world with a top speed of 70-75 MPH. The gazelle immediately becomes alert and bolts! With intensity and agility, the gazelle does everything he can to out run the cheetah. After a relatively short sprint away from the cheetah, the gazelle runs safely away and is spared from becoming the next meal of the speedy beast.
It is tempting to just allow your debts to hang out with you for years. Not only are you letting compound interest work against you, it is not allowed to start working for you! Your heavenly father knows how dangerous this journey can be. He has instructed us to do everything in our power to deliver ourselves from our earthly masters so we can enjoy the true freedom that comes from living without debt.
If you were not able to graduate debt free, at least live like a college student until you move old SallieMae out of your house. If you purchased a car on credit some years back, work a second job until it is no longer carrying a payment book. If you want to pay your credit cards off but can’t seem to get any traction, take a second job or literally eat rice and beans so you can add an extra to your payment and get rid of them.
Get focused and intense for a short period of time and you will get out of debt! This does not have to be a way of life. It only requires a short burst of focused intensity. Once there you will have freedom like you have never experienced. Once you shake your cheetah free, it is an easy jog through the rest of your life.
Get intense! Live a life like no-one else now, so you can live a life like no-one else later! Save your life and RUN!
Don’t go down to the cheetah like this guy did:
It is good to know your direction in life as well, that is a topic for a future post.
Are you ready to get intense and clean up some of your debt? Or are you going to keep grazing around while ignoring the cheetah in the bush?
If you have already started, what have you done to start digging your way out of debt?
