What do you stand for?
Dave Ramsey was in Grand Rapids some time ago and I had the privilege of attending the event this year with my older sister. We had a great time learning about the Total Money Makeover methodology that Dave teaches. In addition, he provided several hours of entertainment and inspiration.
If you have not had a chance to see him live, it is worth the expense and time. He offers a Total Money Makeover Live event in several cities each year. The event covers a summary of all of Dave’s financial principles and philosophies including his seven baby steps as outlined below.
Seven Baby Steps to Financial Freedom
Baby Step One: $1000 to start and emergency account
Baby Step Two: Pay off all debt using the debt snowball
Baby Step Three: Save 3 to 6 months of expenses in savings
Baby Step Four: Invest 15% of your income into retirement
Baby Step Five: College funding for children
Baby Step Six: Pay off the house
Baby Step Seven: Build wealth and give
I will talk more about these topics in future posts.
No Matter What…
This is the second time I have attended this particular live event. The first time was two years ago with my wife. Although most of the content was similar to the last event, one thing stood out for me this time. Something that made me think.
Dave had the entire audience of over 8000 people stand up. He asked everyone to close their eyes and not look around. Threatening to poke a little fun if he found a wandering eye, my guess is most people complied. With our eyes closed, he asked us to point north and then open our eyes. Upon opening our eyes, some people were pointing south, some people east and others west. However, the vast majority were pointing in the true position of north as confirmed by a compass Dave was holding on stage.
At this point, Dave pointed north and and said that no matter what anyone said, north was in this direction (pointing his finger) No Matter What anyone said. He went on to explain how each of us should have principles in our life that are true No Matter What. As spoken by Alexander Hamilton, “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything“, inspired this message.
This really got me thinking. I knew I should take some time to think about a few “No Matter What’s” that apply to me. Here are a few “No Matter What’s” that apply to my life:
No Matter What I will accept Jesus Christ and Lord and Savior in my life.
No Matter What I will stand by my wife from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, till death due us part.
No Matter What I will support my family through good times and bad, bringing them up in God’s ways, based on his love letter to us all.
No Matter What I will remain debt free for as long as God blesses us to remain free from slavery to the lender.
What a powerful exercise it is to put into writing what is most important in my life in writing. Now I know some basic, powerful things I will do when presented with a temptation of this world.
I challenge you to do the same. What do you stand for? What are a few or your No Matter What’s?
